Criminal Law

People from all walks of life get in trouble with the law every day. The seriousness can vary from relatively minor road traffic and public order matters to cases affecting a person’s liberty and freedom.

We recognise the vital importance of prompt and clear advice for any person that finds himself or herself detained as part of an investigation or who has been requested by An Garda Síochána to assist with their enquiries.

In that regard we at McInerney Solicitors are in a position to attend a Garda station in Galway city or county in order to assist you. In emergencies we are available out of hours and on weekends. In that regard, An Garda Síochána will contact us at McInerney Solicitors for you to enable you obtain advices ahead of any interview. REMEMBER, you have a right to consult with a solicitor before questioning. We strongly recommend you avail of this right.

What to do if you are charged with an offence?

You should keep safe all paperwork given to you by An Garda Síochána. You should immediately bring any Charge Sheets or summonses to our office. You should keep a record of what has happened being careful to record times and dates.

We will arrange for a consultation to plan the best strategy for your defence. We will arrange for a solicitor to attend court and speak on your behalf and arrange for bail etc. In that regard we have considerable advocacy experience.

In order to qualify for legal aid you must meet certain criteria. Generally speaking if you cannot afford to pay for your Defence then you may be granted Legal Aid by the courts. Once Legal Aid has been provided we will be in a position to assemble an appropriate legal team to represent you. This may include a Barrister depending on the seriousness of the case.
